Adopting From India: Getting Started

Written by Gladney Center for Adoption | 4/22/25 4:38 PM

Adopting from India is not just a process—it’s a path toward connection, belonging, and family. For those drawn to India, this journey holds deep meaning. Whether you have cultural ties to the region or feel a strong pull toward international adoption, Gladney’s India adoption program offers the opportunity to grow your family with intention, care, and support at every step.

Gladney’s international team opened the India program in April of 2025. Read more about the first advocacy trip here.

Children Who Are Waiting

Across India, children are waiting to be welcomed into permanent, loving families. Many have experienced loss through abandonment, relinquishment, or the passing of birth parents. They now live in the care of trusted institutions.

Families with Indian heritage—those with Non-Resident Indian (NRI) or Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status—are given priority through India’s adoption programs. These families should still expect some delays and be open to mild or correctable conditions. Non-heritage families must be prepared to welcome a child with known special needs, an older child, or a larger sibling group.

Every child has a story. And every story deserves a future filled with safety, belonging, and love.

Who Can Adopt from India?

India’s adoption system is guided by clear eligibility requirements to ensure the well-being of children and families. These requirements are set by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and align with the Hague Convention.

You may be eligible to adopt from India if:

  • At least one adoptive parent is a U.S. citizen
  • You are a heterosexual married couple (married at least two years), a single woman (eligible to adopt a child of any gender), or a single man (eligible to adopt a male child)
  • You are at least 25 years old, and the age difference between parent and child fits within CARA’s combined age guidelines

Age Guidelines:

  • Ages 0–2: Couples under a combined age of 85; singles under 40
  • Ages 2–4: Couples under a combined age of 90; singles under 45
  • Ages 4–8: Couples under a combined age of 100; singles under 50
  • Ages 8–18: Couples under a combined age of 110; singles under 55

When adopting from India, families must also:

  • Be financially stable and emotionally prepared
  • Be physically and mentally healthy
  • Have no more than one child already in the home (unless adopting a child with special needs)
  • Be willing to honor the child’s cultural heritage

If you're unsure whether you meet the criteria, we encourage you to reach out. We’re here to walk you through it, step by step.

What Adopting from India Looks Like

The adoption process is structured and thoughtful, designed to protect children and support families. At Gladney, we approach this work with humility, transparency, and care.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Apply and connect with your Gladney India Team
  2. Complete pre-adoption training, designed to help families understand India’s culture and the needs of children coming from institutional care
  3. Complete a home study, either with Gladney (if you live in a licensed state) or with a local provider that meets our standards
  4. Prepare your dossier, a collection of personal and legal documents required when adopting from India
  5. Receive a referral for a child through CARA’s CARINGS system, India’s centralized adoption portal
  6. Review the child’s file with an adoption medical specialist and complete the required paperwork
  7. Travel to India to finalize the adoption and bring your child home

Families adopting from India can expect to one trip of 10–14 days in country. In some cases, a court hearing may require a second visit. Married couples must travel together. Once the adoption is finalized, children arrive in the U.S. on an IH-3 visa.

After Placement: Post-Adoption Reporting

Gladney continues to support families when adopting from India. Even after the adoption is finalized, we help guide you through India’s required post-adoption reporting schedule to ensure your child is adjusting and thriving.

Reports are due at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months.

These updates are an important part of India’s commitment to the long-term well-being of children and help keep adoption a possibility for future families.

Why Families Choose India—and Gladney

In November 2024, Gladney was officially authorized by India’s CARA to serve as a Foreign Adoption Agency. We are proud to partner with India and to support families through a process that honors each child’s story and identity.

What you can expect with Gladney:

Adopting a child from India is about showing up with open hearts and minds. It’s about creating space for a child to belong, just as they are.
