Adopting a child is a life-changing experience, and for Andrew and Hannah, their journey to adopt Matthew from Colombia was filled with hope, patience, and perseverance. After raising four biological children, they felt the calling to expand their family through adoption. They chose international adoption, and Colombia stood out as the right fit for them.
In November 2022, Andrew and Hannah began the adoption process, with guidance from their caseworkers, Austyn and Misty. They submitted two Letters of Intent (LOIs) for children in Colombia, but neither worked out. Despite this, Andrew and Hannah stayed hopeful, knowing their child was out there. Their persistence paid off in February 2024 when they got the call that they were matched with Matthew, a young boy born prematurely with cerebral palsy (CP).
Matthew’s medical condition was one factor in his long wait for a family, but his story is one of resilience. Despite the challenges of CP, Matthew’s progress has been remarkable. Since arriving home in the US, he’s been attending therapy regularly and has made great strides in his development.
Matthew was placed in foster care shortly after birth, and Andrew and Hannah had the opportunity to meet him in person during their stay in Colombia. This in-country visit, required for the adoption process, lasted over five weeks. While there were challenges, including language barriers and delays caused by a local strike, Andrew and Hannah’s family cherished the time spent bonding with Matthew.
For Andrew and Hannah, one of the most meaningful moments was when Matthew began calling them "mom" and "dad." These small but powerful moments solidified their bond and reminded them why they embarked on this journey in the first place: to give Matthew a forever home.
Adopting a child with special needs can be challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding. Andrew and Hannah’s journey shows how love and perseverance can overcome obstacles, no matter how big. Their family is proof that the heart’s capacity to love knows no limits, and Matthew is exactly where he belongs.
“I don't think anyone can grow unless he's loved exactly as he is now, appreciated for what he is rather than what he will be.” - Fred Rogers
As I have engaged with Hannah and Andrew Deer through the adoption process, this quote describes their relationship with all of their children. They love unconditionally and find joy in the moment with each of their children. It is a blessing to witness as all of their children have complete trust in their parents. I am excited to see how their children continue to grow! - Misty, Adoption Caseworker
