Processing the Journey Home: Supporting Families After a Homeland Trip

Written by Gladney Center for Adoption | 11/20/25 10:30 PM

At Gladney, we know that the experience of returning to China does not end when the trip concludes. For adoptees and their families, coming home is often the beginning of another important chapter. The memories, emotions, and questions that surface during a homeland journey can continue to shape identity and family connection long after the suitcases are unpacked.

That’s why post-trip clinical support is just as important as support during the trip itself.

Why Support After the Trip Matters

Making sense of big emotions
Adoptees often return with complex feelings—pride in their cultural roots, sadness for what was lost, or even uncertainty about where they belong. Without intentional support, these emotions can feel overwhelming or confusing. Gladney’s clinicians help adoptees put words to these feelings, giving them tools to integrate the trip into their broader life story.

Helping siblings process, too
Siblings who traveled alongside adoptees may also return with questions. For some, seeing their brother or sister connect with a birth culture may deepen understanding and empathy. For others, it may stir feelings of difference or even exclusion. Clinicians provide safe spaces for siblings to process these experiences, strengthening family bonds in the process.

Strengthening family conversations
Homeland trips can open the door to meaningful conversations within families—but sometimes those conversations feel intimidating or difficult to start. Clinicians coach parents on how to invite dialogue, validate emotions, and support their children as they continue processing what they experienced.

Building community connection
Reflection doesn’t only happen within families. Post-trip groups and peer gatherings give adoptees the chance to share their experiences with others who “get it.” This sense of community is vital for reducing isolation and building confidence in identity.

Our Commitment
Gladney’s role doesn’t end when families return home. We are committed to walking alongside adoptees, siblings, and parents as they continue their journeys of healing, growth, and connection. With the right support, a homeland trip becomes more than just a visit to China—it becomes a powerful steppingstone toward deeper identity, stronger family bonds, and lasting belonging.
