Hi! My name is Shelly Kalina and I am currently interning in the Domestic Infant Adoption Program working with Adoptive Parents under the awesome supervision of Courtney Kearney. So far, I love it here at Gladney! There is such a wonderful work atmosphere that is a great blend of challenges, fun, efficiency, and teamwork that feels like family.
A little about myself: I am pursuing my MSW from UT Arlington after earning my BAS in Psychology from Dallas Baptist University in 2014. I have a 70 lb. rescue dog named Louis who is quite mischievous but lovable; I might have an unhealthy obsession with the TV show The Bachelor/ette; after grad school I want to give yoga a serious try! I first heard about Gladney about 10 years ago from a friend (and former Gladney employee) who highly praised how great Gladney was as an organization and what wonderful intern opportunities they offered. I tucked that information away, but did not really think much of it until it appeared as an option for one of my MSW internships. I immediately listed Gladney as my #1 choice. After several interviews—and much to my elation—I was selected to intern in the Domestic Infant Program!
At this point, I am still very much learning the routine and flow of casework with adoptive parents. Adoption is definitely a whole, new world for me, but I am excited to learn and feel like a sponge soaking it all up! Some of my favorite experiences so far have been: phone calls to active Adoptive Parents, first face-to-face meeting with Adoptive Parents and Expectant Mom, department meetings (shout-out to Ashley Whiteside and all of her caseworkers), and the many training opportunities that Gladney offers. I could keep going… I know these next 6 months are going to fly by, so I plan to make the most of every day!
