UPDATE on Taiwan SuperKid: Winslow!

We've recently received updates on Winslow and wanted to share more about this special little guy!

Winslow is an affectionWinslowate four-year-old with a gentle spirit and an eagerness to connect. Whether he's diving into movement-based activities at preschool or sharing quiet moments with a caregiver, Winslow approaches the world with curiosity and heart. Though his journey with language is still unfolding, his determination to be understood and his joyful engagement in the world around him speak volumes. He thrives in environments where gentleness and encouragement come together.

Winslow eagerly embraces the preschool curriculum and almost never shows resistance. He lights up during sensory integration activities - running, jumping, and moving rhythmically to simple verbal cues - finding comfort and joy in structured movement and cooperative play. These sessions help him engage fully and build confidence. In music class, his slower language development means he doesn’t participate in singing alongside his peers, but with gentle encouragement from his teachers, he joins in, nodding his head or with his whole body swaying to the music, wholeheartedly engaging in his own way.

Winslow enjoys a warm and playful connection with other foster children, though like many preschoolers, he sometimes misreads their intentions. When another more skilled child steps in to help, he may feel like his toy is being taken and respond with tears - not anger or aggression. His caregivers step in gently, modeling empathy and how to play by guiding the toy back into his hands and helping everyone understand what happened.

While Winslow doesn’t always have the verbal skills just yet, he is a master at communicating with simple gestures and sometimes tears. He often pulls gently at a caregiver’s hand or guides them by the arm toward what he wants. Caregivers respond by asking, “What would you like?” and asking him to lead the way. If he pulls them toward the cookie cabinet, they encourage him to say, “I want cookies,” modeling the words as they go. He is building his vocabulary with his caregivers’ combination of gestures with speech and is beginning to imitate key words like “want” and “cookies,” proving both his willingness and ability to learn and progress.

He thoroughly enjoys visits to children’s playgrounds, where slides and ball pits are his favorite attractions! While navigating the ball pit can be a bit tricky for him, he happily returns to familiar favorites (like the slide), which he can ride again and again for nearly an hour. He’s more cautious when it comes to unfamiliar or climbing-based equipment, but with a trusted adult nearby to guide and demonstrate, he becomes more willing to explore. Indoors, he finds joy in pushing toy cars back and forth across the floor, and if there’s a ride-on car available, he eagerly climbs in and scoots around with his feet, fully engaged. Winslow also has a healthy appetite and can finish an adult-sized portion of food on his own. White rice is his absolute favorite - he often eats every last bite before turning to anything else. While vegetables and side dishes aren’t at the top of his favorites list, he won’t refuse them, just eats them more slowly. His all-time favorite treat is french fries, especially from McDonald’s. He claps excitedly whenever his caregivers bring them home.

Winslow’s family should be ready to gently offer support and guidance and possibly an order of McDonald’s french fries.
